Frequently Asked Questions
I'm sorry if some of my answers here sound a bit harsh, but it's very taxing to answer the same questions over and over again, especially when either common sense or a quick site search would have provided the answer in question. I'm not really a jerk, I promise. 1. Where can I send a complaint about prices, product selection, customer service issues, etc.? 2. Are you hiring? How can I apply for a job online? 3. How can I find your nearest store location? 4. Would you consider selling my product in your store? 5. How much is my collectible worth? 6. Can you help me find an old employee of (insert chain here)? 7. Can you help me with information about my union or my pension fund? 8. Can you tell me more about (insert topic or chain here)? 9. I'm looking for a photo of a specific store. Can you help? 10.Why don't you have any information on (insert topic or chain here)? 11. Whatever happened to (insert chain here)? 12. Can you help me with a research project? 13. Why don't you feature independent stores or new ones? 14. What chains are you most interested in? 15. What are you NOT interested in? 16. Why don't you update more frequently? 17. Can I use your photos on my website, or in my book or magazine article? 1. Where can I send a complaint about prices, product selection, customer service issues, etc.? You should probably do a Google or Yahoo search on the name of the supermarket where you shop and want to send your complaint and do so on that company's site. This is my own personal hobby site, and is not connected with any supermarket chain. I do not have a grocery store. I do not work for a grocery store. It says so on every page of the site. Of course, if you've gotten this far without figuring that out, you're probably not too bright to begin with and you probably stilll won't get it after reading this. Which is sad. 2. Are you hiring? How can I apply for a job online? You should probably do a Google or Yahoo search on the name of the supermarket where you want to work and look on that company's site. 3. How can I find your nearest store location? You should probably do a Google or Yahoo search on the name of the supermarket where you shop and look on that company's site. 4. Would you consider selling my product in your store? This is my own personal hobby site, and is not connected with any supermarket chain. I do not have a grocery store. I do not work for a grocery store. It says so on every page of the site. And if you try to send me an advertisment for your product, or any other sort of spam, I will find a way to make your life a living hell. 5. How much is my collectible worth? I don't know. I also don't care. Please do not ask. 6. Can you help me find an old employee of (insert chain here)? No. Please do not ask. 7. Can you help me with information about my union or my pension fund? No. Please do not ask. 8. Can you tell me more about (insert topic or chain here)? I can pretty much tell you about as much as you see on the site. Please search for your information there first. If you just want clarification, or have an additional question not covered on the site, I'll try my best to help you. If you ask me something that is already covered on the site, I will respond by ignoring you. 9. I'm looking for a photo of a specific store. Can you help? Yes. I can suggest that you contact your local historical museum or library. Particularly in larger cities, there were very often either (a) one or more very prolific commercial photographers who went around shooting businesses either on spec or as an ongoing project, or (b) photographers from the tax assessor's office who shot every business in town. This is the best advice I can offer. 10.Why don't you have any information on (insert topic or chain here)? I run this site as a hobby. I do my own research when I have the time to do it. The site focuses on what interests me; it was never intended to be a comprehensive history of every supermarket in America. I concentrate primarily on California and the southeast because theose are the areas that interest me, and are also the areas where I have lived. If you'd like to write an article on (insert topic or chain here), I'd love to read it and consider incluidng it on the site. For additional information, you might try posting on the Message Board. 11. Whatever happened to (insert chain here)? If I know the answer to that question, I've probably already mentioned it on the site somewhere. There is a handy search function on the site. 12. Can you help me with a research project? I'll do what I can to help get you started. I will not do your research for you. And if you can't even bother to say "please" or "thank you", I may give you erroneous information on purpose, because I'm evil and vindictive that way. 13. Why don't you feature independent stores or new ones? Because they're not what I'm interested in. I have no interest in general stores, small one-off markets in small towns, nor in newer chains (Cub Foods, Whole Foods, etc.). This site deals with the history of supermarket chains. 14. What chains are you most interested in? Safeway, Kroger, A&P, Alpha Beta, Lucky, Colonial/Big Star, National Tea, Kmart Foods, and Food Fair. 15. What are you NOT interested in? If it's not older, urban, or a chain, my interest will probably be somewhat low. I'm not at all interested in general stores, country stores, small independents, chains of only a few stores, chains that operate only in rural areas, nor in newer chains. I'm not really all that interested in newer (post-1990) individual stores either, unless they're extraordinarily interesting or have some historical connection. I also don't generally pay much attention to stores outisde the US and Canada, and occasionally the UK. 16. Why don't you update more frequently? Because I hate you and want to make your life miserable by not breaking my neck to provide you with more free content. And because I have a life and I have other things to do. Like work. 17. Can I use your photos on my website, or in my book or magazine article? I don't hold copyright on the vintage photos and I assume they are public domain. Thus, I can neither give nor deny permission. I do hold copyright on the contemporary photos I've taken. Ask me for permission. We'll work something out. 18. I keep trying to link directly to one of your photos from a message board or another website, but I keep getting a broken image icon. Whycome? Because stealing other people's hosting bandwidth is extremely rude and I've added a script that pretty much keeps you from being able to do it. If you want to use a photo from someone else's site, you need to find a way to host it on your own server - not to mention to ask permission first. I don't pay large bandwidth fees to make your website look good. All my advertsing is handled through Google AdSense. © Copyright David Gwynn. All rights reserved.
